Irene, who came from a humble background, marries David, an older ecology professor, and becomes his wife and assistant within their middle-class household. During a rainforest research expedition aboard a ship, she falls into a forbidden entanglement with Martin, her husband’s eighteen-year-old younger brother, amid the cramped, turbulent vessel. Overwhelming desire is tangled with guilt and inner turmoil. After the trio arrives at the research outpost, the undercurrent of tension between them never fades.
