In her previous life, Sloan went home with her husband Ethan for Christmas. Ethan's childhood sweetheart Hailey repeatedly used "mishearing" as an excuse to cause her allergic reactions, burn her projects, and drug her, while Ethan's family always covered for Hailey—and ultimately watched Sloan die a tragic death. After being reborn, Sloan no longer cleaned up after them. She deliberately exploited the information gap so that every one of Hailey's malicious acts landed on the Cole family instead. Ethan had allergic reactions, his project was burned, and the Cole family then set their sights on Sloan's $120,000 bonus. Sloan secretly protected her career and, through debt and the SilverCrest investment bureau, maneuvered Ethan into forcing his parents to mortgage their house—until the $60,000 was wiped out and the whole family ended up in a cheap motel. Cornered, Hailey contacted Roy, attempting to trade Sloan for $50,000, and Ethan and his parents agreed to drug her. Sloan recorded the conspiracy, pretended to be drugged, and instead had Hailey locked in Room 214. She then forced Ethan to sign the divorce agreement and publicly exposed the evidence of their scheme to sell his wife for extortion at the company office. After losing the house and falling into debt, the Cole family barged into Sloan's company to extort one million dollars, only for Sloan to publicly lay out their old accounts and play the drugging recording. Victor then forced the Cole family to transport drugs for him to pay off their debts. In the chaos, Hailey grabbed Sloan's car keys, and the family drove Sloan's car to make the delivery, hoping to frame her. Sloan pulled the surveillance footage and called the police. Victor, who had already taken Sloan's money, withdrew at the last moment, and Ethan, Hailey, Carol, and Frank were caught red-handed at the transaction scene, each shifting blame onto the others, and all were imprisoned. Sloan officially divorced, was promoted to Vice President of Business, got her bonus back, and decided to start a new life on her own terms.
